MIT Comparative Media Studies (cms.mit.edu)

The challenge

While a graduate student in the Comparative Media Studies program at MIT, I redesigned the program's website. The site needed to reflect not only the breadth of the program, but also the history of media studies at MIT.

The solution

My fellow graduate student Ivan Askwith and I spent weeks on the site's redesign. I selected a separate bold, rich color for each section of the site – News, Events, About CMS, Academics, Research, People and Contact Us – and used randomized super-enlarged images selected from the history of CMS or media studies as each section's backdrop. A News blog was powered by Movable Type and a subscribable calendar was powered using Google Calendar. The site redesign was so successful that it's still in use years later. The site is currently under the management of Andrew Whitacre.

The tools

The CMS website was built using HTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, Movable Type, Google Calendar, and Adobe Photoshop.
